Pieter van der Linden

What is the aim of your PhD Research? The aim of my PhD is to explore the usability of species functional traits as a tool to investigate ecosystem functioning in coastal and marine environments.
What is the most appealing part of your PhD? For me, the most appealing part is to meet and work with interesting people from different Institutes and countries. At the moment I am collaborating with scientists from AZTI (Spain), the University of Pavia (Italy) and the NIOZ (Netherlands).
How will your thesis contribute to DEVOTES project? For the DEVOTES project we need tools to investigate ecosystem functioning in coastal and marine environments. The use of functional indices that are based on traits could be such a tool.
What do you consider your most important accomplishment here so far?  I just submitted a paper in which we tested a total of ten species- and trait-based indices (including a promising new developed index) in an estuarine environment. For DEVOTES we will test and explore the usability of these indices in coastal and marine environments.
What has been your most exciting experience in the project so far?  I went to the AZTI Institute in San Sebastian (Spain) for two weeks to work together with Angel Borja and others. I enjoyed it very much.
What other important information about yourself would you like us to know? I am living in Coimbra which is a beautiful University city in the center of Portugal, if you are planning to visit Coimbra, don’t hesitate to contact me, I could show you the city or if you like surfing, we could surf nearby in Fiqueira da foz (lindenvdpieter(at)gmail.com).
