KAUST was founded in 2009 and focuses exclusively on graduate education and research, using English as the official language. It offers programs in Life Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences, and Physical Sciences. Research at KAUST, both basic and goal-oriented, is dedicated to advancing science and technology of regional and global impact.

Inaugurated in early 2011 the Red Sea Research Center (rsrc.kaust.edu.sa) is part of the Biological and Environmental Sciences and Engineering Division. This Center is well-positioned and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and world-class researchers in order to study the Red Sea. The Red Sea Research Center has delved into the volume of research necessary to formulate a comprehensive understanding of the Red Sea to conserve its biodiversity and sustain its economic eminence. The Red Sea Research Center is committed to developing an integrated understanding of coral reef ecosystems and their oceanographic context. Researchers are investigating the effects of stresses arising from natural as well as anthropogenic factors including overfishing, pollution, coastal development, and global climate change on the physical, chemical, biological, and geological environment. The primary focus of the Red Sea Research Center is developing a scientific basis for sustaining and conserving coral reef environments along the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia.
