The ICM, a research center of the CSIC, consists of 3 departments which carry out multidisciplinary research and is placed in the same building than the Unit of Marine Technology, which operates research vessels for coastal and ocean studies. Approximately 300 persons are currently appointed. The ICM has participated in a large number of research projects funded by the European Community (39 in the last 5 years) related to oceanography in the Mediterranean Sea and other areas, of which 10 have been coordinated from within CSIC. The main research area of partner 16 is the environmental characterization and monitoring of the coastal ecosystem for management porposes and the study of the anthropogenic influence in plantkon in coastal waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean. CSIC is playing a central role in the implementation of the WFD, in coastal and transitional waters, and also in the MSFD groups. The ICM has a fully-equiped plankton laboratory, with epifluorescence and inverted microscopes and image analysis systems (up to 9), scanning electron microscopy, and laboratory setup for cultivation of model organisms. We maintain several coastal time-series stations and we thus have oceanographic sampling andaccess to boats and oceanographic vessels. We have flow cytometry lab, a Molecular biology lab, with PCR machines, Gel electrophoresis, qPCR and a Bioinformatics platform consisting of a cluster IBM IDataPlex, with 144 cores for calculus. We also have had access to the La Palma cluster (Canaries Astrophysical Institute) and to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
