Happy International Day for Biological Diversity 2015!

idb-2015-logo-enThe United Nations declared May 22 the International Day of Biological Diversity to increase public awareness of biodiversity issues and to generate a greater understanding of the worth of Nature.

This date was chosen to commemorate the signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992. Every year this Day is dedicated to a different aspect of biodiversity. The theme for 2015 is “biodiversity for sustainable development”. Biodiversity and ecosystems provide goods and services essential for human welfare – including food, nutrients, clean air and water and regulation of pests and vector-based diseases.

Scientists participating in the DEVOTES project celebrate marine biodiversity everyday through their challenging research. They develop new concepts and models and have published more than 50 articles about marine biodiversity and ecosystem management in the first 2 years of the DEVOTES project. Understanding the relationships between human pressures and climatic influences and their effects on marine biodiversity, will help in developing adequate tools to assess the biodiversity status, which is the main goal of DEVOTES. This knowledge will support policy and decision makers to develop effective ecosystem management procedures.
