The University wishes to appoint a Director-Designate and Reader (*) in Applied Estuarine and Marine Sciences, who is expected eventually to replace Professor Mike Elliott as Director of the Institute of Estuarine & Coastal Studies (IECS). The Institute is a multi-disciplinary pure and applied research and consultancy organisation, founded in 1982, with extensive expertise in estuarine, coastal and marine science and management. It has a staff of over 20 full-time well-qualified marine scientists and technical support staff as well as postgraduate research students.
The University is seeking a high profile scientist who is a recognised research leader with the capacity to manage a large research group; has a track record in carrying out studies in pure and applied estuarine and marine sciences and management and in publishing in these fields; has attracted research grants, services-rendered funding and consultancy from a breadth of sources and is able to interact at all levels both inside and outside the university and hence is comfortable in operating in academic, political, legal and industrial spheres. Although a minor part of the role, the successful applicant will have the capacity to teach on high-level undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
(* In the UK University system a Readership is equivalent to a high level Associate Professorship in other systems who would be expected to apply for Full Professorship within 2-3 years of taking up the position. Salary range £47,787 – £53,765 pa
